James 1:5:
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."
Still hanging around James chapter 1. This morning, when I thought about it, this came to mind. People say that the fear of public speaking is greater than the fear of death. I think that the fear of appearing stupid is right up there.
My friend Gloria has always told me: "Better to keep your mouth shut and have people wonder if you are stupid, rather than opening your mouth and removing all doubt." I love that. I have spent many years, off and on, with foot-in-mouth disease.
So where do we go when we want to find out something, or to gain some wisdom? Siri, on my iPhone, is my constant companion. One time I asked her something and she said to me: That wasn't very nice! And she refused to speak to me for 3 days. I never did find out what she thought I said, and most folks realize that I don't talk like that, but I love the story. I think it is hilarious.
One time I asked Siri to find me the song that has Jesus is the only Way in the lyrics. She replied: I eschew theological disquisition. I had no idea what that meant so I asked Google. It means she won't discuss theological ideas. I decided not to ask Google the question either.
If I go to the internet first, when will I be desperate enough to go to God for my answers and for wisdom? Sadly, most of us wait until we are completely desperate, then we ask God. I want to ask Him first. Not Siri, not Google, but God. He knows the end from the beginning, He knows all things, and the bible talks about the fact that He loves to hear from us and loves it when we actually listen to Him. And our verse today says He won't find fault. He wants us to learn and grow. He will never make you feel stupid. Old tapes may play in our heads, telling us we are stupid, but He never will. He created us for greatness!
So today, before I am desperate, I want to ask God for wisdom. Will you join me?
