Hebrews 11:3
"By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible."
Some people think that it is crazy to believe in a Creator. I think it takes just as much faith to believe there is no such thing as a Creator. We look around and see a magnificent creation. We see the constant nature of our planet. It evolves, things evolve, and there is such a regularity about our world that is astounding. I am grateful that we don't have to wonder if the sun will come up each morning, or that we don't have to worry that the earth will stop spinning at the same rate it has beens spinning for a very long time.
Being concerned that when we breathe on this planet, we won't get oxygen, or that flowers won't bloom and the wind won't blow is nothing we have to carry. We do have to take care of our world. We cannot be foolish stewards of what has been so graciously given to us. Yet, change and evolution are a fact. Things change, and we can't put all of our hope in creation or wind or oxygen.
On one side there is the certainty of nature, and on the other, the uncertainty of life. The older we get, the more we realize the temporary nature of life. Everything is temporary, and our hearts cry out to believe something is permanent. We love consistency, we love knowing that when we turn the key in the car, it will start, that we can open the door of our homes, we will see that shining face of a dog or a cat that we left only a few short hours ago.
As our hearts cry out for consistency, and all we see is inconsistency, where do we turn? Today's news is earth shaking, with Brexit filling the news, and the stock market going crazy. What can we hold on to? What can help us believe we will survive another day?
Look out the window. Smell the breeze, hear the birds chirp and see the crows fly. See the bright faces of youngsters, and watch the dogs pulling their owners down the street with all the enthusiasm of a bumble bee with fresh blossoms in sight. This is how we know we are cared for, this is how we know we are loved. This creation was made for us, for our enjoyment! Everything seems to work very well together. The planets are not colliding, the sun still warms us each day, the moon gives reflective light at night, and the seas bring in fresh nutrients with every crashing wave.
Did this planet and the universe just show up one day? There seem to be indicators of that. But why? Why did the universe show up? There are lots of thoughts on how, but why?
I do like what the Life Application Study Bible Notes on Hebrews 11:3 has to say: "God called the universe into existence out of nothing; He declared that it was to be, and it was. Our faith is in the God who created the entire universe by His Word. God’s Word has awesome power. When He speaks, do you listen and respond? How can you better prepare yourself to respond to God’s Word?"
Our faith is not in creation, but the One who caused it to come into being. He's in charge. If we put our faith in creation, we can become frightened so easily by the random nature of things in the midst of the consistency. We have to look beyond what is in front of our eyes. We have to look at what it all came from and what it all means. My prayer is today you will listen and respond, as the Creator of the Universe calls you to believe.
